The ILS third graders had a special visit from a police officer! It was awesome to hear about the job of a policeman in our community. Each student was able to see the uniform and squad car equipment up close. We learned about what it takes to become a police officer and that once you become an officer, you still have to go to school to keep learning!
Tomorrow, we travel to the Crystal Lake Fire Station to see and hear about the life of a fire fighter! We can't wait!

Busy Week 4
Wow! This week we began taking MAP tests! We also had guest chefs - Pastor Erik and Ben Neider make homemade waffles with their favorite family recipe.
Tomorrow, Jeff Risner, Gabe's dad, is coming to talk with us about being a policeman. In Social Studies we are learning about communities and service providers. Students have been taking pictures of places in their community and will be making books later this week.
Today we read about what happens to a hamburger - after we eat it! Our unit on the digestive system begins. It is so amazing how God made our bodies! It is also "cool" and "gross" at the same time - according to the 3rd graders!
Can't wait to see the police squad car tomorrow!

Weeks 2 & 3
The first 2 weeks of school flew by. A lot of time was spent learning new routines and what happens each day at school. The third graders learned about communities and are busy at home taking pictures of their community. They also learned about microscopes and are beginning to learn about cells - membranes, cytoplasm, and nucleus are terms that were defined and labelled. Everyone is getting so smart!!
In math the 3rd graders are learning about place value. They are also practicing their basic addition facts to improve speed and accuracy as they move into higher level math!
In English, nouns - proper and common are being used and found! The class is beginning to become more and more independent in literacy as the Daily 5 literacy program is beginning in the ILS 3rd grade!
So much more happens each day in 3rd grade! PE, library, Spanish, Art, Spelling, Handwriting, Music are all a part of each week. Everyone should be tired when they get home from school!! Lots of learning and growing!

Freckle Juice
FRECKLE JUICE
The ILS 3rd graders have been reading the book Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. It is a great story! In the story, Andrew wants to have freckles, so he buys a recipe for Freckle Juice! Mrs. Tieman made the recipe in class. She drank a sip and the next day had some freckles! The freckle juice tasted awful!!! Mrs. Tieman did not drink much. I guess that is why the freckles were gone the next day.

Homework without Tears
This year - Homework without Tears
Each night students should plan to work on homework for about 30 minutes. This should be initiated by the students and should include "No Tears!" If a student is crabby or crying, please email me to let me know and I will help you through it!
Each night, check the homework folder and assignment notebook. If there is minimal homework, spend time on math flashcards. During the first 2 - 3 months, practicing addition facts and improving speed and accuracy in this area will really help each student in the classroom. The goal would be about 10 minutes per night. I will send home some good websites that provide good math practice and that would be a good alternative.
Please let me know if there are homework struggles! Let's have a great year!

1st day of school
Hi all!
Tomorrow is the first day of school! I hope everyone is excited! I have been doing lots of planning for the first day of school. I wanted to remind everyone to get a good night sleep tonight and eat a healthy breakfast. You can send a healthy snack to have mid morning each day, along with a water bottle.
We will be doing "get to know you" activities, going to chapel, having a short PE and Math class, and learning about what will happen in 3rd grade. It should be a great day!
All parents should check the homework folder for information this week, along with homework assignments.
Have a great night and see you in the morning! I am praying for each of you this evening!
